Course Description

Course Outline

The course is aimed at high school students. We assume you understand at least the basics of Java programming. The challenges are delivered in an online (web-based) course. There will be professional developers in the course who will be able to answer your questions and provide feedback on your code.

The challenge consists of a few hands-on coding projects that are evaluated by professional software engineers. You should plan to devote a few hours to completing each project in the course.

Material in this course uses the AP Java Subset and is appropriate for students who are currently taking AP Computer Science or are planning to take high school computer science in the future.

This course is being offered free to high school students in support of Computer Science Education Week.

Prerequisites

  • Access to a personal computer (Windows, Mac or Linux) capable of running javac
  • Access to the Internet
  • This course is limited to high school students aged 13 to 18

Format

Taught online. Instructor-led. 1 unit. What's a unit?

A unit measures the time it takes to complete one of our instructor-led courses. Each unit normally requires about 4-6 hours of effort. We expect you'll do at most one unit per week. You may take more or less time to complete the course. Most of our courses are four units. We offer extended time if you need more time to complete the course.

CodeLesson courses are available to students 24 hours a day while the course is in session. That means you can participate in the course even if you have a busy daytime schedule or if you're located in a different time zone.

Courses are comprised of online and offline readings, weekly quizzes, online discussion topics, and hands-on coding exercises that are evaluated by the instructor. You can post questions about the coursework at any time and the instructor will provide guidance. You're never stuck on your own.
