The Linux Command Line

Course Description

The Linux Command Line teaches students how to navigate the Linux operating system through the terminal. Topics include the Linux directory structure, working with files, and creating shell scripts. Students will also learn about file permissions and managing background processes.

• Using the nano editor
• Running and customizing the shell
• Capturing command output (script)
• Navigating the file system (pwd, cd, ls)
• Linux directory structure 
• Working with files (cp, rm, mv, mkdir)
• Synchronizing files and directories (rsync)
• Standard output, pipes and redirection 
• File permissions
• Creating shell scripts
• Installing software via command line (apt-get)
• Evaluating system performance (top)
• Killing processes
• Background processes

Prerequisites

• Basic personal computer skills
• Access to a Linux computer is not required to take this course

This is our basic Linux course for students with little or no knowledge of Linux systems. More sophisticated users may benefit from our more advanced course in Linux System Administration.

Format

Taught online. Instructor-led.
